📝 Crossing the First Gateway of Requirements Engineering
In January 2025, I earned the IREB Certified Professional for Requirements Engineering – Foundation Level (CPRE FL) certification. I’m sharing this review and study tips hoping it will be genuinely helpful for those preparing for the same exam.
Exam Preparation Period & Material Selection Experience
I studied intensively for about three weeks for this exam. Initially, I used the book “Requirements Engineering Fundamentals” by Klaus Pohl and Chris Rupp. While this book provides a solid foundation for understanding the basic concepts of requirements engineering, it was published in 2015 and the content is somewhat outdated. Therefore, it fell short as a primary preparation resource for the CPRE FL exam.
💡 Early Mistake: I wasted unnecessary time relying solely on commercial books. Check the official materials first!

Instead, I strongly recommend focusing your studies on the IREB official handbook.

This document is freely available and very closely aligned with the actual CPRE Foundation Level exam content. It is well-structured, up-to-date, and covers almost all the concepts tested in the exam. Using this handbook as your main study guide is a much more efficient CPRE FL exam preparation method.

IREB CPRE FL Exam Difficulty & Time Management Strategy
The CPRE Foundation Level exam isn’t extremely difficult, but the questions aren’t always straightforward. Many choices include subtle wording that can cause second-guessing. Even after finishing the exam, I wasn’t completely certain if I had passed.
The allotted time is 75 minutes, but non-native English speakers are allowed 90 minutes. I used the full 90 minutes and had sufficient time to review my answers at the end.
Time Allocation Strategy
- First Pass: 60 minutes (answer all questions)
- Review: 30 minutes (revisit uncertain questions)
Practical Tips for Passing the CPRE Foundation Level Exam
1. Study Centered Around the Official Handbook
The IREB CPRE FL official handbook contains nearly every concept that appears on the exam. Focus on thoroughly understanding this material.
2. Get Familiar with Requirements Engineering Terminology
Many questions depend on your ability to accurately interpret Requirements Engineering terms. Don’t just skim; truly internalize the definitions.

- Verification & Validation3. Practice Applying Concepts, Not Just Memorizing
The exam assesses how well you can apply theories to practical scenarios. Solving some CPRE FL sample questions or taking mock exams helps you get used to the question format and logic.

4. Watch Out for Ambiguous Options
Some questions include tricky or ambiguous answer choices. Read carefully, refer back to the concepts you’ve learned, and choose the answer that best aligns with the definitions in the handbook.
Real Experience: The most confusing area for me was the difference between ‘Requirements Verification’ and ‘Requirements Validation’. Pay extra attention to this section!
Final Thoughts: The Value of the CPRE FL Certification
The IREB CPRE FL certification is a great way to solidify your fundamentals in the field of requirements engineering. While hands-on experience isn’t necessarily required to pass, a deep conceptual understanding is essential.
Especially if you prepare intensively for about three weeks using the official handbook, you should be in a strong position to pass the CPRE Foundation Level exam.
